However, while thread count is still important, it's not the only way to determine the quality of a duvet cover. For example, linen duvet covers are considered very high quality, but typically have a thread count of 80-150, which is very low for cotton.

What do the different cotton fibres and weaves mean?

If you're still a cotton fan, knowing a little more about this popular material can help you choose the perfect duvet cover for you. Though they're all under the same “cotton” umbrella, there are many different types of cotton fibers and weaves. Here are the four most common:

  • Egyptian Cotton Grown exclusively in the Nile Delta of Egypt, it features long, thin fibers that are woven into a luxurious fabric, making it softer, smoother, and more durable than regular cotton, which is why it has a higher thread count (ideally between 200 and 800) and is more expensive.
  • Cotton Percale Duvet covers are made from regular cotton, while “percale” refers to the cross weave used to make the bedding. These duvet covers usually have a very crisp and cool feel, which is why they are popular for hotel bedding. When it comes to thread count, you can expect between 200 and 300 for a high-quality cotton percale duvet cover.
  • Cotton Rain It has a soft, supple feel and a silky look. Like cotton percale, “sateen” refers to the unique way cotton is woven. Cotton sateen is warmer against the skin than cotton percale and is generally the duvet cover of choice for people who don't like hot weather. A thread count of 300-600 is ideal.
  • Waffle dough The cotton is woven into the fabric to create a three-dimensional finish. As with other techniques, the duvet cover fabric is soft, breathable, and easy to care for as it does not require ironing.

How we test duvet covers and bedding sets

When it comes to duvet covers and bedding sets, everyone has different preferences, so when testing bed linens for this edit, we scored them on design, comfort, breathability, quality, and how easily the bedding can be washed. We tested as many duvet covers as we could in our own home, sleeping on each one for at least 30 days, and the rest are in the process of being tested. For those we haven't actually tested yet, we read customer reviews and spoke to experts.
