What is linen and what are the benefits?

Linen comes from the flax plant which is grown largely in Europe. It’s trickier to harvest and spin than cotton which is why it’s often a more expensive investment. But it also uses less water to grow (and is biodegradable), which is why it’s considered more environmentally friendly, too. And, the fibre is quite durable, so you should get great value over time.

Linen is naturally anti-microbial which should reduce the risk of bacteria growth and makes it well-suited to allergy sufferers. It’s a great buy for hot sleepers too; its loose weave makes it breathable, as air can easily flow throughout the textile, keeping your bed at a cooler temperature. Not to mention it wicks away moisture, too.

How do you care for linen?

Linen tends to get softer the more you wash it, which is undoubtedly a real treat for your skin. But this doesn’t mean you need to wash it more than normal. Our household advice editor recommends washing bedding at least every two weeks.

Most linen can go in a normal wash cycle (and indeed, we test them in the GHI’s washing machines to check this), but always consult the manufacturer guidance for the sheets you choose before popping them in the wash to make sure you’re treating them with the care they deserve.

As for ironing them, we’d recommend popping yours away – their creased look is all part of the charm.

How we test linen bedding

There are two stages to our linen sheet testing. Firstly, we send out each set (comprising a duvet cover, pillow cases and a sheet) to a panel of readers who snuggle up with them, night after night for up to a month. They then report back to us about how comfortable and breathable they were. They also tell us about what the sheets were like to wash, and if it was straightforward making the bed.

Back at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our experts carry out thorough wash tests, analysing the sheets for shrinkage, colourfastness and overall quality. Our testers then collate all the different data points to find the very best buys.

The GHI Approved logo below will show you all our tried and tested recommendations, then we’ve also included some of our shopping editor’s favourites, to give you a good picture of what’s on the market.

All the prices are for a double set where available.
