Sheets that get better with every wash? If that sounds like you, buy a pair of linen sheets for your bed. “The beauty of linen is that it only gets better with age,” says interior designer Hanin Smith, owner of HIDE Studio in Carlsbad, California. “Just like leather ages over time, linen softens so you won't notice it with daily use.” Not only do linen sheets get more comfortable with age, experts say they also tend to be cooler thanks to the natural moisture-wicking properties of the material.

Ready to add a linen set to your sheet collection? We asked the experts what to look for when shopping and got their top picks for linen sheet sets. First, read all about the benefits of linen sheets.

What are the benefits of linen sheets?

There are a variety of great materials for sheets, including percale, sateen, and cotton, each with their own pros and cons. Linen's biggest con is that it wrinkles easily. “Linen is ideal for people who love a relaxed look, but definitely not for people who hate wrinkles, as it's not structured or smooth,” says Smith. “It's meant to look worn and not fussy, which lends itself to a laid-back beach aesthetic.” If you can live with the relaxed look, Jennifer Fitzpatrick, principal designer at Studio J & Co, says you'll reap the benefits. She shares them below:

  • Breathable and cool: Linen is known for its excellent breathability, allowing air to circulate and preventing the sleeper from getting too hot, making it a great choice for people who get hot easily or live in warm climates.

  • Softens over time: Unlike fabrics that can become rough over time, linen sheets become softer and more comfortable with each wash.

  • durability: Linen is a durable, long-lasting fabric that can stand up to years of use.

  • Natural and Hypoallergenic: Linen is a natural fiber that is resistant to dust mites and mold, making it ideal for allergy sufferers.

How to Choose the Best Linen Sheets

To help you buy linen sheets, we asked interior design experts what to look for. Here are the main features they recommend:

  • material: To ensure you're getting high-quality linen that will last, Smith says you should look for sheets made from 100 percent flax linen. Flax yarn is a particularly durable material.

  • Certification: To make sure your sheets are made without harmful chemicals, Fitzpatrick says to look for a certification called OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Products with this label have been tested and certified to be free of harmful levels of toxic chemicals.

  • price: Our list of linen sheets includes sets at a variety of price points, but experts point out that linen sheets can be a bit pricey. “You're buying a natural, high-quality fabric, so be prepared for a higher price range,” says Tina Martin-Del-Campo, interior designer and contributor to the design website Soul and Lane.

How to care for your linen sheets

With the right care, your linen sheets will last as long as possible. Fitzpatrick says they should be machine washed in warm water with a mild detergent. As for drying, high temperatures can cause shrinkage and wear out the fibers more quickly, so Fitzpatrick recommends line drying when possible or tumble drying on low heat.

Smith and Fitzpatrick also recommend avoiding bleach and fabric softeners, which can weaken linen fibers and shorten the lifespan of your bedding. And if your bedroom has lots of windows, consider keeping the blinds closed when the sun is at its brightest, as sunlight can fade your linen, says Martin Del Campo.

Finally, if you don't mind a wrinkled look, you can just place the sheets on your bed straight out of the dryer. For a crisper look, Fitzpatrick suggests ironing them on a low heat for a smoother look.
