The fastest way to flip a duvet cover over

Inside-out method
Flip the duvet cover over the comforter so the correct side is facing out.

Average time: 1 minute 23 seconds

Three out of five testers found this to be the quickest way to put on a duvet cover. On average, he was 20 seconds faster than the next fastest method.

The inside-out method was voted by most testers as their favorite way to put on a duvet cover after trying all the different options.

However, although this method is fast, it does require a bit of strength and stamina to do well. If the arm is short, he may have to perform one corner at a time, but this method can still be completed relatively quickly compared to other methods.

If you want to get your work done quickly, this method is perfect for you. However, if you don't mind taking a little more time and want to have some fun, check out the least effort method below.

Instructions:

  1. Lay the duvet flat on the bed.
  2. Turn the duvet cover inside out, insert your arm, and reach into the two corners of the cover away from the clasp.
  3. With the duvet cover still on your arm, hold the two corners with both hands, then reach down to the duvet lying flat on the bed and grab the two corners closest to you.
  4. Raise your arms and swing the duvet cover down onto the rest of the comforter.
  5. Turn the comforter over and shake it by the opening corner at the end to spread the comforter evenly over the entire cover.

The easiest way to put on a duvet cover – roll

Roll method
Rolling the comforter and duvet cover together, like a Swiss roll, takes a little more time, but it's easier on your arms.

Average time: 3 minutes 2 seconds

This method of installing a duvet cover takes considerably longer than the fastest method, but requires minimal effort.

All of our testers agreed that this method required the least effort and they couldn't believe it worked until they tried it.

Instructions:

  1. Turn the duvet cover inside out and place it on the mattress with the opening furthest away from your body.
  2. Next, place the comforter on top of the cover, being careful to line up the corners.
  3. Starting at the closed end of the duvet cover, begin rolling the duvet and cover together. Think Swiss roll.
  4. Once fully rolled, secure by folding the duvet cover opening over the roll. You need something like a duvet sausage.
  5. Then, simply unfold the comforter and shake it until the cover is evenly spread. As I said, that doesn't seem to work. But it happens.

Other methods we tried:

all in

all in method
Unfold the cover and insert the comforter straight into it, corners and sides together.

Average time: 1 minute 57 seconds

This isn't the fastest or easiest method, but it appears to be the easiest way to get the job done.

However, after stuffing the comforter into the cover, it can be a bit of a pain to unroll it and spread it out evenly and flat.

Instructions:

  1. Place the empty duvet cover upside down on the bed.
  2. Place the entire duvet inside the duvet cover.
  3. Align each corner of the comforter with a corner inside the duvet cover.
  4. Shake it to spread it evenly.

ghost method
Similar to the inside-out method, flip the cover over your head and then turn it over.

Average time: 1 minute 47 seconds

This method is similar to the inside-out method, but this method covers the entire body, making it difficult to see what you are doing.

It didn't take much longer than the fastest method, but it's a bit more complicated, so it's not the most recommended method.

Instructions:

  1. Lay the duvet flat on the bed.
  2. Turn the duvet cover inside out and place it over your head and body.
  3. Reach down and search for a corner of the duvet cover.
  4. Find the corner of the comforter through the cover and pull the comforter toward you.
  5. With the comforter inside, shake the cover to remove it and spread it evenly over the entire comforter.

To find the fastest way to put on a duvet cover, we enlisted the help of five testers.

  • Each volunteer practiced each method once before completing the test.
  • We timed the time it took to complete each method, right up to the point where we lined up the duvet and cover on the bed and buttoned it up.
  • Each volunteer recorded which method was their favorite before the test, and which method was their favorite after the test.
  • Each person completed the test on a double bed with a double-sized comforter and duvet cover.
